British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

During the school year we relate our learning and experiences to these values throughout all of our curriculum areas and in our weekly Key Stage Assemblies. We use a resource called Picture News for our Key Stage Assemblies. This resource focuses on different news articles and topical events. The children are given time to explore the news article and then reflect on how they link to the British Values. We share the content of our Key Stage Assemblies on Ludworth Life each week so the children can share their thoughts and ideas with their families at home.

Upholding the British Value of Democracy at Ludworth

At Ludworth, we are committed to developing a deep understanding and appreciation of democracy as a cornerstone of British values.

  • Empowering Pupil Voice
We facilitate a democratic process for electing our School Councillors, ensuring pupils experience first-hand the importance of fair and inclusive decision-making. Our School Council actively contributes to school life, giving children a platform to share ideas and influence positive change.
  • Learning About Democracy in Action
Through our curriculum, we teach children about the democratic processes in Britain at local and national levels. We explore the roles of communities, pressure groups, and how individuals—young and old—can contribute to shaping society. From engaging in discussions about local initiatives to understanding global movements, our pupils learn how their voices can make a difference.
  • Embedding Democratic Principles in Daily Life
The principles of democracy are woven into our everyday routines, from taking turns and sharing ideas in class discussions to demonstrating fairness and respect during lunch and after-school activities.

By engaging with and understanding these practices, we prepare our children to become informed, active participants in their communities and beyond.
