Writing at Ludworth

At Ludworth, we recognise that oracy and writing are foundational skills that empower our pupils to thrive both academically and socially. Fluency serves as a gateway to success across all areas of the curriculum, and writing proficiency equips children with a voice to participate fully in society. Our goal is to nurture confident, capable writers by providing them with the tools and strategies they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Our progressive writing curriculum is anchored in high-quality vehicle texts, ensuring that pupils engage deeply with literature as they develop their skills. This approach is rooted in the intrinsic link between reading, writing, and oracy, enabling pupils to produce work that is clear, structured, and purposeful. By developing this connection, we prepare children for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.

Our writing pedagogy is informed by research and aligns with the evidence-based recommendations of the Education Endowment Foundation. Through this robust and reflective framework, we ensure that every child at Ludworth embarks on a writing journey that is meaningful, engaging, and impactful.

Spelling at Ludworth

Our spelling programme builds seamlessly upon our phonics. In Key Stage 1, we use Super Sonic Phonic Friends, transitioning in Key Stage 2 to the Spelling Shed programme. Key Stage 2 pupils maintain spelling jotters, which serve as a constant resource to support their understanding and application of spelling patterns.

Recognising the role of spelling fluency in effective writing, we equip all pupils with the tools to master the spelling patterns appropriate for their year group. Our tailored approach in Key Stage 2 includes bespoke spelling programmes designed to address individual needs, offering additional practice for patterns pupils find challenging.

By including self-reflection and independence, our spelling curriculum ensures personalised learning experiences that empower every child to succeed as a confident and capable writer.

Oral Language at Ludworth

At Ludworth, oracy is woven into the fabric of school life. You’ll hear pupils solving problems collaboratively in Maths, dissecting arguments in History, resolving playground conflicts, and delivering assemblies with confidence.

Just like Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, oracy is a skill that can be explicitly taught and developed. Strong oral language skills underpin academic achievement, effective communication in the workplace, and the ability to build healthy relationships.

Our commitment to oracy ensures that every child develops the confidence and ability to express themselves clearly, ensuring critical thinking, empathy, and leadership. Through a rich variety of opportunities, we empower pupils to find their voice and use it to make a difference.
